D1 builds duplex villa in vietnam with local materials and a coconut leaf roof

situated on a 600 sqm land plot adjacent to the hoi an river in quang nam province, vietnam, the M villa by architecture studio D1 is built with local materials and skilled craftsmanship, which help integrate it within the surroundings that are still wild and under-developed. the duplex villa incorporates a large coconut leaf roof, which makes it appear like a large tent from distance.

surrounded by lot of nipas, the signature tree of the area, the villa incorporates living areas on the exterior, while the interior space inside is reserved for resting, with both spaces seamlessly connected to the surrounding nature. D1 has arranged all functions within the residence vertically, leaving the ground floor open, flexible, and easy to move in case water level rises during heavy rainy season.

‘the challenge of this project is to effectively exploit the surrounding landscape and inject soul into the project via the use of local materials,’ notes the vietnamese studio. ‘moreover, the project has to be able to endure the harsh climate in hoi an, with a long rainy season and a very cold winter. even worse, this location witnesses frequent storms and floods every year.’
