THE NATIONAL LIBRARY OF SWEDEN: THE ANNEX

The Annex of the National Library was initially built in 1997 in a former underground book depository, but in 2012-2013 it was remodeled by Murman Architects to better meet current needs.

Working simultaneously as the architect, interior designer and general consultant to the project, Murman Architects sought to make the building more functional and attractive while improving the indoor climate, accessibility, security and fire protection.

An important objective of the remodeling was to attract more life into the previously under-utilized building, so great efforts were put into creating pleasant reading and study environments. The access to existing functions and services has also been improved – for instance, the floor of the lower level where the microfilm reading room is located, was opened up to draw in natural light and to dramatize the experience of the room. The Annex has expanded The National Library with a modern public space that beautifully complements the beautiful reading rooms in the main building from 1878.

The Annex consists of three underground floors with a single central skylight, so the high light reflection of the acoustic Rockfon® Krios X ceilings and the unique Rockfon Mono® Acoustic ceilings was a welcome contribution to the indoor environment.

In September 2014, The Annex was awarded the Swedish Lighting Award due to the “interaction between daylight, lighting and bold color scheme” and because the project team "turned a gray, dark and dreary room into a bright and inspiring learning environment in a way that shows the very great knowledge within the profession.” The project was lighting design company ÅF Lighting, Murman Architects, and the client The National Property Board.
