Lahznimmo designs revamp of Haberfield library and community hall

Construction is set to begin on the renewal of a heritage library and civic centre in Sydney’s Haberfield, designed by Lahznimmo.

The first stage of the project, the refurbishment of Mervyn Fletcher Hall, was completed in October 2019. The project also involves the expansion and modernizing of the Haberfield Library and Community Rooms.

Included in the works are the rearranging the library interiors, which will make the facility more user friendly and fit for purpose. A new lift, internal ramps and accessible toilets will also modernize the building in terms of accessibility.

Sustainability will be boosted with the inclusion of a new, energy-efficient air conditioning system, rainwater re-use and water-saving appliances.

The project received $2.5 million in funding from the Sydney Motorway Corporation, which was required as part of its Conditions of Consent for the WestConnex M4 East motorway project.

The rejuvenation of the library and community hall was chosen by Inner West Council following a survey of locals, with the “poor street presence” of the buildings identified as a key concern. In a report to the council, planners wrote that “It is unclear that they are community facilities available for hire, available for program activation, and operated as a council community facility.”
