Villa One is an affordable prefab home that accommodates a growing family

One of the biggest challenges of buying a home is finding a budget-friendly house that can accommodate the needs of a growing family.

Danish architecture firm EFFEKT rose to that challenge with their design of the Villa ONE, an affordable prefab house that can easily add bedrooms as the family grows bigger. Built on the outskirts of Copenhagen, the minimalist timber-clad structure was created to both match the cost and surpass the quality of Denmark’s cheapest kit homes.

The architects designed the flexible 136-square-meter home with a Y-shaped floorplan to maximize communal spaces and views out to the landscape, courtyard, and secret garden. The shape of the house also helps protect residents from the noise of the visually hidden, but loud highway located at the end of the sloped property. To maximize the noise buffer zone, the architects installed a meadow sculpture garden between the house and the highway.

The Villa ONE’s minimalist interior comprises mostly white surfaces, curved walls, timber floors, and floor-to-ceiling windows that flood the house with natural light. Impressively, the majority of the interior spaces are devoted to social and communal use, with a 45-square-meter living and dining room serving as the node of the three wings. The western wing contains the master bedroom, while the southernmost wing houses the children’s bedrooms, a bathroom, and kitchen. The third wing contains a sunken living space that can easily be converted into a third bedroom. The garage can also be turned into a fourth bedroom.
