Amazing wood Pequod caravan comfortably fits a family of four

Rocky Mountain Tiny Houses recently completed one of the most exquisite tiny homes we’ve ever seen.

Named after the whaling ship in the 1851 novel ‘Moby-Dick,’ the timber-clad Pequod evokes a ship at sea with its porthole windows, wavy metal roof, and blue-painted base. Built for a family of four that sought “the best of the best,” this tiny house was commissioned without the typically constraining low budget. The result is a beautiful and meticulous design that pulls out all the stops and is described as Rocky Mountain Tiny House’s “most elegant and complex build to date.”

Currently parked in Indiana, the Pequod is on the larger side of tiny homes. Weighing 11,500 pounds, the tiny house measures 26 feet in length and a maximum of 8.5 feet in width, with varying ceiling heights that max out at 13.5 feet. The drop-axle trailer chassis created four inches of added headroom in the loft spaces. The facade is wrapped in three-layered cladding that includes a blue-painted board-and-batten base, clear grain cedar lap siding, and cedar shingles. Multiple glazed openings, from the solid brass antique porthole windows to the handmade operable arched loft windows, bring generous amounts of natural light into the Pequod.

The interior is lined with high-quality wood, including custom-milled clear vertical grain Douglas Fir ceiling planks, custom-crafted hickory and walnut countertops, and birch hardwood flooring. To maximize space for the family of four, the Pequod features plenty of custom-built multifunctional and transforming furniture. The most eye-catching furniture pieces are the welded steel catwalk with Plexiglas flooring that connects the loft spaces, and the custom-built movable couch with dining table/bench/ottoman sections. Integrated storage is hidden in the stairs, loft plenums, and pullout shelves in the custom-designed pantry.

Home appliances include a LG combo washer/dryer, wood stove, full-size high-quality bottom freezer and fridge unit, and a 20-inch range. The bathroom is outfitted with a large window, Nature’s Head composting toilet, and custom 36-inch-by-32-inch shower. LEDs are located throughout the house. The Pequod even comes with a wraparound wooden deck that can fold down to expand the footprint of the house.
