Adam Knibb’s twin wooden homes seem to hover above the ground

Adam Knibb's Cedar Lodges in Winchester, England, look like twin wooden houses suspended above the ground.

Located on a plot previously occupied by a derelict garage, the semi-detached properties were designed to blend in with the area's visual style. Clad in vertical cedar planks that will turn silver and age over time, the 'floating' paired homes are a testament to contemporary design that also integrates with the local architecture.

The twin wooden cedar homes have narrow facades and each is topped by a thin gable roof. They are situated away from the street, just like the surrounding houses. The designers wanted to not only match the area’s style, but they needed to avoid looking directly into a house across the street. So the architects placed only a few windows and triangles of glazing under the roof to bring in light and sky views while maintaining privacy.

Inside, the twin homes are white, modern and open-plan to maximize natural light. Since the plot is narrow, both homes have outdoor patios on the sides rather than on the front or back. The ‘floating’ effect is enhanced at night, when the grey monolithic base on which the homes stand disappears in the dark.

 

The designers wanted to match the area's existing style, while assuring that the homes didn't look directly into a house across the street.
