Green-roofed tubular Casa Trasanquelos is built right into the Spanish hillside

New York-based OneOfficeArchitects designed a house embedded into an existing slope in Galicia, Spain.

Casa Trasanquelos comprizes two slightly shifted tubular volumes stacked on the other in order to maximize views of the surrounding landscape. This private residence was awarded the 2015 Bronze Award of Merit by the New York Council of The Society of American Registered Architects (SARA).The house almost disappears into the hill and creates several distinct spaces that flow between the exterior and interior while providing optimal levels of privacy. The two tubular volumes shift and bend to create exterior spaces and maximize views and optimize orientation. The light, transparent facade features operable wooden screens which control the amount of natural light coming into the interior and allow views downhill to the valley beyond. Towards the street, the massive corrugated facade filters the views of the surrounding trees and shelters the space from outside views coming from the street.

A small courtyard was formed in the intersection of the two volumes and one of its roles is to draw additional light into the most remote spaces of the house. This space, which slowly rises to meet the ground level of the slope is not seen from the street.
