UFO-shaped Mazatlan Museum is heading to Mexico
Mexico is about to welcome a new museum that looks just like a UFO. Fernando Romero Enterprise (FR-EE) unveiled their design for the Mazatlan Museum, which resembles a spaceship but was actually inspired by the region's alternative name - Pearl of the Pacific.
The museum will have a curved volume with small openings to allow natural light to reach interior spaces, and will hopefully uplift the port city of Mazatlan.
The project, supported by entrepreneur and member of Union Trust Mazatlan, Ernesto Coppel Kelly, aims to position Mazatlan as a cultural mecca and boost the tourist and economic potential of the port. The innovative, ecological and minimalist design is based on an elongated shell containing three floors of large exhibition spaces, green areas and terraces that provide views of the sea and the city. Mazatlan Museum will be located on the International Lions Avenue, next to the Laguna del Camaron.
Mazatlan is a unique place, with a particular history and incomparable beauty, so we have decided to make a building that suits its context, with a sustainable design which will become an icon on a national and international level,” said Romero who presented the project to the city officials this month.
The structure is clad in weather-resistant materials and features the main exhibition on the lower floor, an IMAX cinema and various spaces for temporary exhibitions, restaurants and a large terrace overlooking the port. The building is expected to break ground in 2016.
