BYTR architecten’s extension of a 19th century home combines old and new under one roof
Rotterndam-based BYTR architecten designed an extension of a detached 19th century home in the city of Zeist, in The Netherlands, and combined the two spaces under one roof.
Mansard architecture and modern gable roofs create a new composition that is invisible from the street.
The extension doubles the living space of the old house but still remains inconspicuous as it is hidden behind the existing structure. Although the extension contrasts the existing building with its anthracite, flat facade and detailing, its overall volume fits perfectly with the surrounding architecture and references the shape of the historical mansard roof.
The interior, boasting a large new addition, is spacious and features a contemporary atmosphere. It houses old and new elements under one roof: through a large sliding facade, one can step into the modern kitchen with plastered ceiling and concrete floor that stands contrasting to the original wooden beams and oak flooring.
