Tubular school canteen made from 4 prefab modules pops up in 90 days
This tubular primary school canteen in Oviedo, Spain was built from four prefabricated modules in only 90 days.
Spanish architect Miguel Ángel García-Pola Vallejo designed the project in order to provide new space for the school kitchen, dining hall, storage space and toilets in time for the new school year.
The four modules of the 226-square-meter structure were fabricated a few kilometers from the campus and then transported on the back of a truck to the site, where they were assembled. The entire process took just 90 days–the fabrication of the modules took 45 days and the other half was spent constructing the building on-site.
The oval form of the building allows rainwater to run off the side naturally and eliminates the need for gutters. It is easily maintained and its open plan layout allows for functional flexibility. The structure can be entered on two sides: at the end near the toilets and storage area and on the north side near the kitchen. Thanks to its modularity, the building can be extended or adapted for different uses, quickly dismantled and transported to another location.
