Solar-powered Out of the Valley cabin is a perfect off-grid retreat for two
City dwellers yearning for a modern eco-friendly escape in the country will love the Out of the Valley cabin, a solar-powered rentable abode, where high craftsmanship is king.
Designed with a minimalist aesthetic, the secluded cabin offers off-the-grid luxury living in England’s forested Teign Valley on the norther edge of Dartmoor. Designed and built by Rupert McKelvie, the charred timber-clad cabin is the first prototype for Out of the Valley, a Devon-based workshop dedicated to off-grid and sustainable cabin design and construction.
The Out of the Valley model cabin is clad in a charred timber, created with the Japanese shou sugi ban technique, and topped with a black corrugated roof. The dark exterior helps the cabin blend in with the hundreds of acres of National Trust woodland. An outdoor oak deck with a canvas shade overlooks views of the River Teign and offers fantastic wildlife-watching and star-gazing opportunities.
Trained in traditional wood boat building and furniture design, McKelvie handcrafted the open-plan minimalist interior and furnishings from English ash and oak. A king-sized bed is tucked into one corner and located opposite from the L-shaped kitchen counter with a cooker and gas hob. The home also includes a compact bathroom with monsoon shower and composting toilet. A small dining/living area is organized around a wood-burning stove. The Out of the Valley cabin rents for £130 ($204) to £160 ($251) per night, depending on the season.
