Stunning revonated alpine workshop is bathed in natural light
Italian architecture firm Messner Architects renovated a traditional alpine workshop and transformed it into a much more spacious workspace bathed in natural light.
The building, owned by a sculptor and artist preserves the rustic qualities of the original structure, but creates a striking geometry with two large sculptural windows-light catchers- which draws light into the interior.
The architects separated the large hall of the existing structure by introducing two parallel walls, creating three distinct spaces-one storage area in the center and two large workspaces on each side. Each space has access to the second level via narrow staircases. The new design incorporates shelves made from reclaimed materials of the former ground floor which separate the rooms and function as additional storage areas.
Three existing windows on the south side and one door on the west facade were replaced by two large openings-light-catchers-that cut through the porch. Besides allowing natural light to floor the room, the openings frame views of the interior and establish an interesting, almost minimalist appearance. The wooden fins extend through the roof to collect daylight and provide shade at the same time.
