reiach and hall architects insert perforated light catchers into maggie's lanarkshire

shortlisted for the prestigious RIBA stirling prize, edinburgh-based practice reiach and hall architects were responsible for the design of a new maggie’s centre in scotland.

situated on a peaceful garden on the grounds of the airdrie house estate, visitors enter a quiet simple space, defined by brick walls and two lime trees. the low-lying building presents an internal arrangement where a sequence of courtyards, private and communal spaces effortlessly merge together to create a relaxed and enjoyable ambiance.

the building is punctuated with four small courtyards, with two of the core courts featuring gold perforated metal light catcher which illuminates the space with natural daylight. this perforated pattern is a recurrent design feature seen internally and on the outer masonry boundary. with the communal spaces such as the library, kitchen and dining based at the heart of the building, and the private on the sides, the furnishings have been finished with a neutral and soft material palette. the journey through the building emerges out into a large walled garden that slopes down to the east and generous terraces open up to a richly-planted garden serving as a serene space for quiet reflection or conversation.
