#LANDSCAPING AND URBAN PLANNING PROJECTS

Marstallplatz Hannover

What now is a parking lot will in the future be transformed into an multi-functional square smartly defined by the careful placement of two new buildings at both ends of the square

This year the plan will be implemented in the master plan of HannoverCity 2020+. The Marstall location will probably be developed as one of the first sites, due to its strategic position in the urban setting.

According to the jury: "Maxwan and LOLA from Rotterdam won competition for Marstall because of the design of the public square and the convincing integration of the building volumes and spatial relations within the existing urban tissue. The project thereby makes a significant contribution to the inner city development of the coming 10 to 15 years." The placement of the buildings is strategic and unorthodox. One building links to the riverside and finalizes the inner city riverfront fade.

The other building is a stepping stone between the posh shopping street and the flourishing nightlife north of the Marstall. The created space will have the proportions of the Piazza Navona in Rome. A gradually sloping topography in the square design creates a stage at one end and a basin at the other end of the space. Year round the square is suitable for activities such as concerts, ice-skating, water fun and of course a Biergarten.

Trees are preserved in certain locations creating an intimate character, others are removed opening the space and allowing in light. Refined and simple gestures transform the parking lot of the Marstall into a logical and lively square in the inner city of Hannover.
