Kinetic “Cloud Seeding” pavilion creates shade with 30,000 tiny balls made of recycled plastic bottles

This lightweight pavilion may look like a simple canopy structure, but it's actually a fantastic kinetic environment that creates shade thanks to thousands of constantly rearranging tiny plastic balls made from recycled water bottles.

Designers at MODU named the project "Cloud Seeding" which is supposed to reflect the effect of passing clouds the pavilion creates.

The structure is located in the public plaza in front of the Design Museum Holon in Israel. It is meant to provide a space for performances, outdoor dance classes, reading a book or simply enjoying some shade, while welcoming museum visitors.

The main concept is to create a dynamic and responsive boundary between sun and shade. Thousands of lightweight balls-the seeds-are made from recycled plastic water bottles. Around 30,000 balls move around across the fabric mesh ceiling, manifesting wind current wind intensity.

The structure also references Israel’s agricultural landscapes dominated by greenhouses. Similar to their structural configuration, the pavilion re-appropriates this typology and turns it into a cultural space.
