BIG's 'one high line' stands completed as a pair of twisting towers in new york
INTRODUCING ‘ONE HIGH LINE’ BY BJARKE INGELS GROUP
The twisting towers of Bjarke Ingels Group‘s One High Line stand completed over the streets of West Chelsea, marking a new icon on New York‘s Hudson River skyline. The project introduces both luxury residences and a Faena hotel to the creative neighborhood. Formerly known as the XI, One High Line takes its place along ‘Architecture Row,’ where visitors to the High Line can explore works by Renzo Piano, Jean Nouvel, Neil Denari, and Zaha Hadid.
This collaboration between Bjarke Ingels, co-CEO of developer Witkoff Group, Alex Witkoff, and acclaimed designer Dan Fink has at last taken shape as a completed landmark in New York.
LUXURY HOMES AND HOTEL OVER THE HIGH LINE PARK
Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG)’s One High Line comprises two unique buildings — the east tower stands tall at 300 feet (91m), and houses 87 residences together with a luxurious Faena hotel. Meanwhile, the west tower reaches an impressive height of 400 feet (122m), accommodating an additional 149 residences.
The exterior showcases a facade of glass and travertine stone, harmonizing modernity and timeless craftsmanship. While the deliberate play of strong geometries defines its unique composition, the design is not driven by meaningless form — the twisting was meticulously engineered by the architects to provide the residents with the most optimized view from each vantage point.
‘The building we’re in is facing west. We’re still only eight floors from the top, but as we go higher the building gets wider so we get the sunset,’ explained Bjarke Ingels during an interview with designboom at the project’s topping-out in 2019. ‘We’re still only eight floors from the top, but as we go higher the building gets wider so we get the sunset. So the twisting face right now is actually facing north, but it is adjusting to ultimately become completely straight to the west. As we get lower we’re opening up this view portal for the east tower.
‘Because we pull back we open up the water views which the lower floors otherwise wouldn’t get. In return, the east tower becomes slimmer higher up so at the top the west tower finally has a view toward the south and a view to look down to the High Line.’
