#LANDSCAPING AND URBAN PLANNING PROJECTS

Pop Up Park

Studio1:1 completed in Rotterdam a temporary park where residents of the area can share their ideas about the future of the park area with each other and the designers.

By introducing the temporary park, CityLab010 has kicked off the conversation about how the green space should be shaped to fit everyone’s needs. In an innovative approach to area development, the pop up park invites residents of the area to share their ideas about the future of the park area with each other and the designers.

With the design of the pop up park, Studio 1:1 has chosen for an image where plants seem to tumble from a building truck, emphasizing that “green work” is underway. All plants originate from the municipal nursery garden and will be returned at the end of the project. By seizing the moment to invite stakeholders to test the park and get used to the new function of the square, the developers set out to optimize public support and ownership.

The pop up park is part of a multi party initiative, overseen by CityLab010. As part of the initiative Stichting Stadspodium and Brand Communicatie have realised several physical and programmatic interventions over the course of the summer. Picknick benches and a sandbox have been installed, a book club has been set up and dance and music workshops have enlivened the public space, even before the arrival of the permanent city park.

With their inclusive approach, all parties involved in the Grotekerkplein project respond to recent trends to area development. Residents and other stakeholders are used nowadays to have a voice in development that concerns their neighborhoods. In this instance, their input is requested before the permanent park has fully taken shape. The result is a co-creation between municipality and end user, facilitated by professional parties. The pop up park on Grotekerkplein can be visited until the end of September.
