zU-studio's private house in Costa Rica resembles the overlapping leaves of a bird
ZU-STUDIO’S N2 RESIDENCE OVERLOOKS SANTA TERESA
Amsterdam-based architectural office zU-studio conceives project N2, a private residence located on top of a hill overlooking the beach of Santa Teresa. Costa Rica, a captivating destination for bird enthusiasts, offers a diverse array of bird species with over 80 varieties soaring through its skies. In this context, the project seeks to embody the essence of freedom of movement and the connection with nature. The house opens up to ocean views as the design draws from the physical structure of a local bird surveying the horizon and flying over the sea. The configuration celebrates the moment of takeoff and the graceful movement of wings. The building shapes a simple yet original structure that harmonizes with the surroundings, employing a systematic approach that exudes elegance and simplicity both inside and outside the house.
THE STRUCTURE RESEMBLES A BIRD’S PLUMAGE
The sculptural roof, evocative of bird plumage, is constructed using a lightweight framework that forms a succession of platform-like shapes at varying heights. These platforms enable natural light to filter through the gaps, creating captivating windows from the bedrooms on the first floor. Some of the platforms are accessible, extending the terraces and providing unique spaces for exploration. The design emphasizes the use of organic shapes, resembling overlapping leaves that embrace the sea views.
The design team ensures unobstructed views while also attending to crossed ventilation throughout the house. The rounded shape of the structure maximizes the number of meters that overlook the ocean. The height of the house reaches a maximum of seven meters at its central point, gently descending towards the sides to seamlessly integrate with the natural context. The landscape surrounding the house arranges a central courtyard adorned with vibrant flowers, serving as both a welcoming space and a communal gathering area. The interplay between interior and exterior spaces is an integral feature of the three-story building.
The ground floor encompasses the common areas, including a connected living space, kitchen, and a central courtyard that beckons guests into the house. An atelier at the back of the structure adds to the versatility of the space. Three private bedrooms on the ground floor provide stunning sea views, while an open semi-circular terrace platform features a pool and offers direct access to various areas on the ground floor. On the first floor, two suites serve as master bedrooms, flooded with light from three facades. These suites also boast generous terraces that seamlessly connect with the roof platforms.
