Jorge Garibay configures brutalist house in Mexico as tetris-like pink concrete volumes
JORGE GARIBAY ARQUITECTOS UNVEIL BRUTALIST LUJAMBIO HOUSE
Jorge Garibay Arquitectos has completed a single-family dwelling in Juriquilla, Mexico, with a distinct brutalist geometry conformed by two windowless, tetris-like volumes that repeat and approach each other, but never touch. With an abstracted exterior configured like tetris bricks, the Lujambio House’s interior features fluid spaces centered around a core pool and an L-shaped courtyard, integrating light and greenery into the home.
Externally, the Lujambio House has a monolithic character that pays homage to traditional Mexican architecture, celebrating geometry, materiality, and color with the use of colored board-concrete walls tinted with hues of pink. This construction system provides a unique color and textural palette, creating a contrast between the house and its surroundings. Stepping inside, the roughness of the concrete is softened by the softness of the natural light that seeps in and the warm tones of the furniture, creating an ambiance that evokes silence and introspection.
AN ABSTRACT, WINDOWLESS COMPOSITION OF TETRIS BLOCKS
The design premise is focused on simplicity using minimal materials, such as concrete, steel, and rich wood accents from the wood-paneling walls and floors, achieving a rustic yet contemporary aesthetic. Encompassing 452-square-meters the Lujambio House features a dynamic and fluid layout centered around a central pool with a young tree, creating an inviting L-shaped courtyard. Creating an approachment between form and texture, Queretaro-based firm Jorge Garibay Arquitectos blends social spaces in the ground floor, where an open-plan living and dining area connect to the terrace through expansive windows.
The kitchen and studio areas, subtly enclosed by walls and accented with black cabinets and dark-marble counters, complement the overall design. Meanwhile the garage on the west wing showcases a unique extrusion reminiscent of tetris bricks. A sculptural staircase leads up to the private spaces, featuring a double-height ceiling and a large square window that frames the view towards a private garden. The upper level encompasses a master bedroom, two secondary bedrooms, a family room, and a terrace.
