miklos kiss renovates the house of a historic postmaster in hungary

miklos kiss renovated a house in hungary by creating a thematic interior design based on the life of its previous owner: the head of the mátraszentimre’s post office.

to honor his life and work, the architect decided to call the place ‘the house of the postmaster’. a feeling of contemporary architecture, mixed with the style of a mountain house, encompasses the whole design.

the house’s interiors display an elegant simplicity accentuated with specific details, such as the staircases found in each bedroom that lead into the attic mezzanines. their handrails go from the floor to the ceiling and when they reach the top, they flow along the attic’s border, creating a cage-like structure that acts as a space divider. although they have the same function, both staircases are completely different: one is large and white, contrasting the other that is black, with a ladder-like look.

because the original furniture of the home didn’t survive the passing years, miklos kiss tried to recreate the atmosphere with everyday objects and accessories from the post office. the whole space was designed with this in mind and to complement the interiors, a graphic identity was conceived. most of the furniture is constituted of recycled and reused elements granted with new functions. ‘the house of the postmaster’ is a place where every detail has been taken into consideration to create a meaningful place.

the kitchen has elements that have been reused and given new meanings with colander lamps and spoon handles
