LYCS architecture renovates hotel into affordable student housing

with the rising rent problems faced within majority of the high-density cities in china, LYCS architecture approached this situation to design ‘campus hong kong’.

faced with little space, and high living expenses, the designers formed a new and more affordable way targeted at young people and students. the project is located in the hong kong’s tsuen wan district, where an existing hotel was renovated to accommodate 48 student apartments located in the lower 3 levels the building.

with a limited floor area of approximately 27sqm, the interior of room had to be fitted with beds for four students, a communal dining/study space, kitchen and bathroom. the main challenge was promoting a sense of privacy while diminishing a feeling of claustrophobia. this lead for the removal of the partition wall between two rooms and having it replaced with a central high table used as a common space for study and socializing. utilizing every inch available: the bed was designed to be half raised with the study desk placed underneath meanwhile a blackout curtain for privacy. given the cost of material and labor in hong kong, the budget of the whole project was relatively low, allowing more focus to be on crafting a comfortable environment through detail and furnishings.
