TAA design shapes living complex in Vietnam as a matrix of flying blocks & large trees
THE FLYING BLOCK BY TAA DESIGN: IMPROVING HIGH-RISE LIVING
Completed in 2023, The Flying Block by architecture studio TAA Design is a residential–hotel complex dedicated to professionals living and working in Vietnam‘s Phu My town, where the largest concentration of industrial parks from the Ba Ria Vung Tau province take shape. As its name suggests, and given the site conditions — an area riddled with factories and container ports — TAA Design introduces the concept of hovering ‘nature blocks’, with the hopes of improving the quality of high-rise complex living in intensely urbanized and industrialized regions. Spanning 1,200 sqm, the project could be considered a nature-filled landmark amid the Vietnamese cityscape.
A STAGGERED MIX OF HOVERING VOLUMES & GREENERY IN VIETNAM
More specifically, the TAA design team composed the high-rise building as a matrix of blocks with a width varying between 2 and 3.5 meters to provide a variety of outdoor programs, such as gardens and elevated playgrounds, ‘that are integrated into each space to offer a natural experience and relaxation after a day of work in the industrial park,’ writes the architectural team. Furthermore, the blocks are arranged in a staggered manner, making vertical room for large trees to grow and develop while also creating a lively rhythm across the entire building facade.
Layout-wise, The Flying Block complex is divided into four sections, with the traffic lane also serving as a natural ventilation gap to increase airflow. The combination of the extended blocks and large trees provides shade to the surface of the building.
