#LANDSCAPING AND URBAN PLANNING PROJECTS
McGregor Coxall Joins SANAA on Sydney Modern Project
Sydney-based landscape architectural practice McGregor Coxall has been appointed to work with the Art Gallery NSW and Japanese architects SANAA to develop the landscape design concept for the Sydney Modern Project.
This next step in the project follows SANAA's competition win in May 2015, when the duo of Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa bested Kengo Kuma & Associates, Kerry Hill Architects, RMA Architects, and Sean Godsell Architects.
McGregor Coxall was selected in an invited competition, in which conceptual designs by five landscape firms were reviewed by a panel made up of Art Gallery NSW representatives, SANAA and the Royal Botanic Gardens, which the Sydney Modern will be linked to via a new plaza.
Art Gallery NSW Director Michael Brand said of the appointment, via Visual ArtsHub: "SANAA’s concept is outward looking, engaging strongly with the surrounding landscape and communities. ... McGregor Coxall has a design aesthetic that aligns with SANAA’s concept. The firm’s commitment to restraint and use of finely crafted details will also complement SANAA’s style."
The Sydney Modern Project, currently priced at $450 million AUD, is planned for completion in 2021.
