Munarq architects transformed a crumbling farmhouse in Mallorca into a stunning painting studio

This rustic painting studio for an artist was once a crumbling old farmhouse.

Mallorca-based design studio Munarq renovated the dilapidated structure located just outside of the small town of Dolors Comas in Mallorca and created two large spaces - an exhibition gallery and a workshop - that offer privacy and an abundance of natural lighting.

The architects decided to preserve as much of the original structure as possible and renovate the interior to provide large spaces for the artist and his work. Severely damaged, the old farmhouse was stripped to its construction materials, while the internal walls were re-plastered and painted white. Exposed wooden beams and staircase treads contrast the white interior and brings warmth to the minimalist space.

Together with the original structure, the additional wing forms an L-shaped plan with a total area of 230 square meters. The entrance is nestled at the juncture of the two volumes and leads to the gallery space on one side and the artist’s studio on the other. The two wings also form a courtyard that adds an element of nature to the design.
