evolution design converts chapel into quaint holiday home in england

swiss firm evolution design were charged with converting this chapel into a spacious self-catering holiday home for up to seven guests

based in the middle of the uninterrupted countryside of forest-in-teesdale in country durham, this peaceful english holiday home has a large open-plan kitchen, living room and four bedrooms. dating back to the 1880s, the existing structure was left vacant and in a state of disrepair for a protracted period of time. the conversion project enabled architects and engineers to regenerate and evaluate the chapel for maintenance and improvement.

internally, the space has been decorated in a contemporary manner all the while being set among a backdrop of the high chapel ceilings, gothic windows and timber trusses. ‘we wanted to create a space that was modern and yet had a traditional language that would complement the historic nature of the chapel and appeal to a wide range of guests. this was reflected in our choice of furniture and finishes,’ explains designer paul king. ‘all materials and design had been considered in the context of the character and appearance of the existing building and the teesdale vernacular. traditional materials were proposed to ensure the scheme respects the character of the landscape and the existing buildings.’

the aim was to keep a traditional feel by retaining the roof trusses with a natural finish
