Six institutions merge into durable, light and spacious building

Noorderbreedte is an unique, beautiful and very broad new school

The newly built community school Noorderbreedte Diemen is very broad. It employs a total of six institutions for education, care and development of children. The building also has a function as a meeting place for the neighbourhood. Noorderbreedte is furthermore very durable with thermal storage, Marmoleum on the floor and heat-insulating glass. On top the school is beautifully designed by Leijh, Kappelhoff, Seckel en Van den Dobbelsteen (LKSVDD) and Reitsema & Partners architects, with lots of wood, glass, light, space and a beautiful 'lookout' expansion.

The idea of a community school - and therefore of the new building in Diemen North - is that a school serves not only as a place of education for children. By building bridges between school, home and leisure schools broaden their reach, and they can contribute to the community development of the district.

The building was designed by the agency Leijh, Kappelhoff, Seckel en Van den Dobbelsteen (LKSVDD) and Reitsema & Partners architects. It consists of six transparent and manageable

units around an open central heart. In the teaching units are lockable instruction rooms that can be used for multiple purposes. The theater stage in the central heart, is the logistics connector. It is a meeting place, a relaxing place and a gallery staircase in one.

The premises/class rooms are the home base of each class/groups. In addition, the children can make use of a space in which they can learn alone or little groups. These spaces are called learning squares.

For the exterior of the building is chosen for a wooden trim. This gives the school the striking appearance that was intended by the municipality for the entrance of Diemen North. The building also consists for a large part of (thermal and insulating) glass. There is much attention to the interior. Furthermore, use is made of heat and cold storage in the soil to achieve environmental and cost gains. In addition there is a lot of durable Marmoleum Striato on the floors which also contributes to the sustainable picture.
