atelier king kong to build concrete canopy over vitry center metro station in france
bordeaux based firm atelier d’ architecture king kong have recently released their proposal for a new metro station in vitry-sur-seine in france.
constructed especially for the grand paris express line, this station is part of an ambitious project to modernize the existing transport network which will form a ring route around paris. the brief was for the stations to embody and support the innovation plans of the grand scheme, while meeting the needs of the diverse areas of the île-de-france region.
atelier king kong’s response sees the vitry-center station developed as a covered concourse illustrated by a curving gentle slope. folding upwards at the entrance, the organic nature of the concrete mass forms an overhead roof and visually draws the attention down to the lower-ground station. meanwhile on the top, there will be greenery planted to link it back to the neighboring park. the circular holes carved out will naturally invite daylight, and at the same time provide views of its context. this transitional space, links the inside and the outside but also the station’s identity within the urban fabric.
