ZAHA HADID’S HEYDAR ALIYEV CULTURAL CENTER
Hadid's architectural interpretation of one country's vibrant culture
If you want to stand out from the crowd, you should be taking lessons from Zaha Hadid Architects. The latest photos of the Heydar Aliyev Cultural Center in Baku, Azerbaijan, once again demonstrate her ability to be different. The building seems to grow directly out of a central plaza, challenging the idea of architecture as part of the landscape rather than a simple addition, while its billowing curves provide a stark contrast to the Soviet-era architecture that dominates the city. Hadid’s creation seeks to connect with the Azeri culture, reinterpreting the historically present patterns of ancient Islamic architecture and the fluidity of Arabic script. The center will also work to promote and preserve the vast and rich history of Azerbaijan, playing host to a variety of cultual exhibitions and events.
