WESTCLIFF PAVILION

Johannesburg (SOUTH AFRICA) / 2008

“What is a wall?” you might be asking yourself the first time you see GASS Architects’ Westcliff Pavilion. Its structure of steel beams and locally sourced stone do the impossible: they float. What GASS calls ‘creative engineering’ has lent this residential project a sense of lightness, which allows the home to peacefully co-exist with the environment. Aside from the building’s minimally invasive construction, the steel frames facilitate the placement of large glass windows and doors that reinforce the home’s connection with the great outdoors. And that bedroom? It gets our vote for best place to get a good night’s sleep in Johannesburg.
