svet vmes renovates poljane grammar school entrance hall in slovenia

slovenia studio svet vmes was placed in charge of renovation efforts for the entrance hall of the svet vmes renovates poljane grammar school entrance hall in slovenia in ljubljana, slovenia.

the design concept highlights existing qualities in the historical shell — walls, stucco ceiling, elaborate columns — while correcting some of the poorer reconstructions of the past.

the space itself is a small square in the front of the building. to access the school’s main hall and central staircase, visitors and students must past directly through svet vme’s intervention area. their work replaces the existing ceramic floor with a tiered concrete terrazzo podium, on which nine steel spatial frames are placed. these elegant forms encourage students and staff to experiment with different spatial compositions — they’re movable — and can be used for various school exhibitions and information points.

the concrete elements highlight the symmetry of the space, and invite students to sit down and socialize. a minimal round light fixture was also added, which emphasizes the historical ceiling and its floral stucco ornamentation.
