SHENZHEN BAO’AN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT INAUGURATION

Official opening of Studio Fuksas' elegant airport in China

The Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport was officially inaugurated on November 28th. Designed by much lauded architects Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas, the airport is a vital addition to Shenzhen which is one of the fastest growing cities in all of China. The terminal covers 500,000 square meters and is 1.5 kilometers long. It will be able to handle up to 45 million passengers each year with its 78 gates (15 of which are remote). Studio Fuksas won the opportunity to design the airport during an international competition in 2008. They created a sculptural and elegant structure whose form mimics a manta ray and is dressed in an internal and external double ‘skin’ with a “honeycomb” pattern which lets in natural light. Studio Fuksas will continue to work on the massive project with further phases to be completed in 2025 and 2035.
